What is Jyotisha?

Jyotisha (the study of light) is a system of divining the nature of an event or situation through the observation of the placement and patterns of the cosmos.  It can be used to help people understand the karmic patterns in their lives and the possible ways and times those patterns may manifest. It is also used in the timing of events to ensure the best possible result of an undertaking.

Jyotisha is also called Vedic Astrology or Indian Astrology. It differs from Western Astrology in several ways. Most notable is the way that the zodiac is measured. Western astrology is based on the Tropical zodiac; Jyotisha is based on the Sidereal zodiac. In addition, Western astrology places more importance on the Sun sign, while Jyotisha looks to the Ascendant (the constellation that is rising at the time of birth) to give greater insight into the person’s overall nature.

The moon also plays a very important role in Jyotish, as it represents the mind and emotions. Traditionally, the sound associated with the location of the moon is used in the naming of a child.

Birth date, time and place are uses to cast the horoscope, which consists of 9 planets and 12 constellations posited in 12 houses. Each planet, constellation and house has their own meanings and significations. It’s the interplay of the meanings of each one with all of the others that gives each person their individuality and unique life experiences.

About Susan Lalji:

Susan has been a student and practitioner of Vedic traditions for nearly 20 years. She began practicing Yoga in 1995 and received her 500-hour Teacher Certification from Studio Yoga in 2001. While undergoing her Yoga Teacher Course, Susan was introduced to the teachings of Advaita (non-dual) Vedanta. Drawn to these teachings, she began attending classes at Arsha Vidya Gurukulam, an institute dedicated to the traditional teaching of Vedanta, Yoga, and Sanskrit founded by Swami Dayanada Saraswati. She has been a student there since 1998, including two years as a resident staff member.

While on staff at the Gurukulam, Susan had the opportunity to take several classes in Jyotisha (Vedic Astrology) with Vinay Aditya, Penny Farrow, and other visiting teachers.  In 2009, she began her formal study of Jyotisha with Penny Farrow and has since served as a teaching assistant and administrator for Penny’s Jyotisha classes.  She is currently studying Palmistry as a complimentary discipline for her Jyotisha practice.

She began offering astrology readings in 2011as a way to facilitate a person’s understanding of the karmic patterns in his or her life and how or when they may manifest. Past clients have remarked that the readings have helped them to understand certain aspects of their lives, bringing clarity, perspective, and peace of mind. In addition, she currently conducts one-to-one yoga/meditation classes and is guiding Studio Yoga’s Advanced Teachers Class through the “Yoga Sutras” of Patanjali.

She holds a B.S. degree in Environmental Science and an M.S. degree in Biology and worked for many years as an Environmental Scientist and Field Biologist.
