Forward bends turn the attention inwards and bring the brain and heart to a restful state. However, many of us struggle with tightness in our hips, hamstrings, and groin area which make it difficult to experience the wonderful effects of forward bending. 

In this special series of postures, we will explore how to make forward bending more accessible to your particular body. We will be looking at ways to increase flexibility by balancing important muscle groups that assist healthy forward bends.

 

Susan Turis, CIYT, is certified at the Intermediate Junior II level in the Iyengar method, having been mentored by senior teachers Mary Dunn and Carrie Owerko.

In addition to teaching classes in Brooklyn and Manhattan, Susan assists senior teacher James Murphy in the Special Needs class at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York.  An enthusiastic student of philosophy, she also leads a Yoga Sutra Study Group.

Her continuing Iyengar education includes workshops with seniors teachers, extends visits to Pune, India, and past conventions with BKS Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar, and more recently, Abhijata Iyengar.

Susan’s enthusiasm and love of the subject allow students of all abilities to have a safe and complete experience in class. Her attentive instruction, thoughtful rhythm, and skillful sequencing of poses help students progress to students progress and experience more subtle aspects of yoga.
