Experiential Anatomy is a somatic practice where learning becomes a practice of experience.   In these classes we will look at the anatomical composition of the body and the relationships in the musculo-skeletal system.  We then apply what we have learned to movement and asana.

Exploring asana and embodiment is an entryway into Sadhana, translated as “a means of accomplishing something.”  Through Sadhana, you learn how to ease discomforts of the body and the mind, explore the Inner Self, and move towards an optimal state of being.

This class series is open to all — students, teachers-in-training, and teachers – who want to practice self-development in a safe environment.  We will practice yoga and experiential anatomy using the tools of both Iyengar Yoga and the School for Body-Mind Centering.

Week 1: Awareness, a basic foundation to begin Analysis in Action
Spinal Connections: Blueprint of the Body – Presence of Mind and Concentration. This class introduces the concepts of alignment of the body, mind and breath, structural awareness, effort and effortlessness.

Week 2: Support Precedes Movement
The Lower Limb: Basic joint actions of the lower limbs in asana. How to find and maintain leg and hip support; and how to adapt poses to one’s body and experience. Practice leg balancing poses.

Week 3: Mobility and Integrity
The Upper Limb: Basic joint actions of the upper limbs in asana. How to transition from single muscle, joint-unit awareness towards an experience of integration.
Practice arm balancing poses.

Week 4: From Periphery to the Center and Back
Pre-Spinal and developmental awareness: The concept of effortless effort.
Introducing an alternative experience of the musculo-skeletal system

Patanjali says in Yoga Sutra II.46 that an asana should be done with stability and contentment.  The tools of Iyengar Yoga give us clear directions to move towards that goal.
